DC Circuit Breaker Ampere-Second Characteristic Tester
Product Overview
DC power distribution networks in substations generally adopt a tree-shaped three-level distribution structure, with DC circuit breakers widely used as protective components. Mismatched operating characteristics between upper and lower-level breakers often cause unwanted tripping faults, leading to power outages and potential damage to primary power equipment. Relevant industrial codes and regulations mandate regular ampere-second characteristic tests for newly installed and in-service DC protective devices to guarantee proper stage coordination of DC circuits.Traditional testing equipment for ampere-second characteristics is bulky, complicated to operate and limited to professional laboratories. Some field test methods using substation battery banks cannot achieve accurate current-time characteristic measurement. The MEAS-500A tester is developed for on-site field application, featuring portability and high automation. It is designed to verify operating characteristics and stage matching of DC protective devices, effectively improving the operational reliability of DC power systems and power grids. This instrument is applicable for testing ampere-second characteristics of DC circuit breakers with rated current ranging from 1A to 500A, as well as DC fuses with rated current from 6A to 150A.

Application Scope
- Routine inspection and characteristic testing of DC circuit breakers and DC fuses in substations· Verification of stage coordination performance of multi-level DC distribution protection devices· Acceptance test for newly installed DC protective electrical appliances· Periodic performance spot check for in-service DC protection components in power systems
Operation & Structure Description
Panel Structure
The front panel integrates power interface, power switch, LCD screen, LCD contrast adjustment knob, full-function keyboard, thermal printer, RS232 communication port, current output terminals and grounding terminal. All functional areas are reasonably arranged for convenient wiring and operation.
Working Modes
1. Standalone Operation
- Complete wiring according to the wiring diagram before power-on. Select the required test mode on the welcome interface via direction keys and confirm to enter the main operation interface.· Set rated current, current multiple and maximum test duration in the parameter setting area. The actual output current is calculated as Rated Current × Current Multiple. Restrictions: Output current ≤ 500A; Test duration ≤ 9999s for current below 200A; Test duration ≤ 300s for current above 200A.· Start the test after parameter configuration. The system automatically times and captures the tripping signal of the tested device, then records and stores test data after test completion.· Operate the clear and print functions to delete selected records or print test reports; access the function management interface to adjust system clock or clear all historical data.
2. PC Online Operation
- Connect the instrument and PC via RS232 cable, then run the supporting upper computer software.· The software supports file opening, data saving, Excel export and print preview. Enter the test interface to remotely control the tester, upload real-time test data, display data curves and generate standardized test reports.· Multiple repeated tests can be performed under the same current multiple, and the software automatically calculates average values for comprehensive data analysis.
Standard Compliance
The product complies with the Operation Specification for DC Power System, Technical Supervision Regulation for DC Power System and Measures for Preventing Accidents of DC Power System issued by State Grid Corporation of China, meeting the on-site test requirements for DC protective electrical appliances.
Storage & Transportation
Transportation Requirements
- Use the original wooden packaging box and shockproof accessories for transportation to avoid mechanical damage.· When packaged with the original box, the maximum stacking layer is 2 layers; stacking is prohibited without wooden packaging.· Keep the instrument panel facing upward during the whole transportation process.
Storage Requirements
- Store the equipment in dry, dust-free, ventilated rooms without corrosive gas.· Lay moisture-proof materials at the bottom of the equipment during long-term storage; stacking is not allowed.· Keep the panel upward when placing the instrument.
Daily Maintenance & Precautions
1. Rotate the current adjustment knob counterclockwise to the zero position before turning on the power switch.
2. Place the instrument in dry and ventilated environments free of corrosive gas.
3. Do not disassemble, modify or repair the equipment without authorization to prevent electric shock hazards.
4. Keep the wiring terminals tightly connected during testing and remove dirt and oxide on the tested device terminals to ensure good contact.
5. Do not block the ventilation duct of the instrument during operation. The overheating protection function will automatically stop the equipment in case of overheating; restart the tester after proper cooling for normal use.
FAQ
Q1: What is the maximum number of test data groups the instrument can store?
A1: The built-in storage can save up to 200 groups of test records, and all data can be retained after power failure.
Q2: What are the limits for test current and test duration?
A2: The maximum output current is 500A. For current below 200A, the maximum test time is 9999s; for current above 200A, the maximum test time is limited to 300s.
Q3: Why cannot the PC connect with the tester normally?
A3: Check whether the RS232 communication cable is connected firmly and verify the selected serial port number in the upper computer software.
Q4: The instrument stops running suddenly during the test, what is the possible reason?
A4: It is generally triggered by the overheating protection. Stop the test and cool down the instrument before reuse.
