The active part of the RC divider consists of capacitive and parallel connected resistive dividing elements. The length of the active part extends along the entire insulator length, which results in linear voltage distribution. Both elements are calibrated to each other and provide accurate transient voltage signals from the high-voltage side to the low-voltage side. The RC divider enables very high frequency bandwidth; even direct voltages (DC) can be measured.

Wide Frequency Bandwidth
The RC divider can operate from DC to high-frequency MHz ranges. It can accurately measure DC voltage, power-frequency voltage, and fast transient signals in one device.
Low Power Loss
At 50/60 Hz, the capacitive part mainly controls the voltage division. Since capacitors consume very little real power, the overall power loss of the RC divider is very low.
Good DC Measurement Capability
Unlike a pure capacitive divider, the RC divider can also measure DC voltage. The resistor branch works at DC and low frequencies, ensuring accurate voltage measurement.
Uniform Voltage Distribution
The resistor and capacitor elements are distributed along the insulator length, creating a uniform voltage gradient. This reduces electric field distortion and improves insulation performance.
High Accuracy and Stability
The RC divider provides high measurement accuracy and stable performance under different temperature and operating conditions, making it suitable for metering and protection systems.

Types of Resistive Capacitive Voltage Divider
Analog-Digital Mixed Voltage Dividers
Combines analog signal conditioning with digital processing to handle high-voltage inputs with precision. These systems use analog components for initial voltage scaling and filtering, followed by digital conversion and analysis.
High-Resolution Digital Voltage Dividers
Engineered for applications requiring sub-millivolt precision, these dividers use high-bit ADCs (16-bit to 24-bit) and temperature-compensated resistors to detect minute voltage changes.
Real-Time Digital Voltage Dividers
Designed for fast dynamic response, these dividers process voltage data with minimal latency using high-speed ADCs and FPGA-based processing units.
Low Power Consumption Digital Voltage Dividers
Optimized for energy efficiency, these dividers use low-power microcontrollers, sleep modes, and efficient voltage scaling techniques to minimize energy use.
High Isolation Digital Voltage Dividers
Featuring galvanic isolation (optical, magnetic, or capacitive), these dividers safely measure high voltages by electrically separating input and output circuits, protecting both equipment and users.
Application of Resistive Capacitive Voltage Divider
Industrial Automation & Power Monitoring
Requires wide input voltage ranges, electrical isolation (e.g., galvanic isolation), and robustness against surges and transients. Accuracy within ±1% is often sufficient.
Semiconductor Testing & Calibration
Demands ultra-high precision (±0.01% or better), excellent temperature stability, and high resolution (16-bit or higher ADCs).
Renewable Energy Systems (Solar/Wind)
Needs high-voltage handling (up to 1000V DC), long-term stability, and resistance to environmental fluctuations.
Data Acquisition & IoT Devices
Prioritizes compact size, low power consumption, and digital communication protocols (I²C, SPI, UART).
Power Rating of Resistive Capacitive Voltage Divider
Calculate Power Dissipation: Determine the total current through the divider (I = Vin / (R₁ + R₂)) and compute power in each resistor (P = I²R).
Safety Margin: Select resistors with a power rating at least 1.5 to 2 times the calculated dissipation to ensure reliability and longevity.
High-Voltage Applications: Use resistors rated for high voltage and consider derating at elevated temperatures.
Low-Power Applications: In signal-level circuits (e.g., sensor biasing), standard 0.25W or 0.125W resistors are typically sufficient.
Components of Resistive Capacitive Voltage Divider
Active Part (High-Voltage Section)
The active part extends along the insulator and includes a capacitor stack connected in series and a parallel resistor chain. This design ensures uniform voltage distribution and reduces electric field distortion.
Hermetic Sealing and Expansion Bellows
The internal components are hermetically sealed to prevent moisture and contamination. An expansion bellows compensates for oil volume changes caused by temperature variation and helps maintain stable operating pressure.
Shielding Electrode
For systems rated 420 kV and above, a shielding electrode is installed in the divider head. It improves electric field distribution and ensures accurate voltage measurement under high-voltage conditions.
Terminal Box (Low-Voltage Sectio
The terminal box contains the secondary measurement and protection components. It provides division ratio adjustment, over-voltage protection, and easy maintenance access through a side-opening cover.
Operating Principle of Resistive Capacitive Voltage Divider
Operation at Power Frequency (50/60 Hz)
At 50/60 Hz, the capacitor impedance is relatively low, allowing most of the voltage to be distributed across the capacitor stack. As a result, only a very small amount of power is dissipated within the divider. The resistor divider carries only a small correction current and is mainly used to improve low-frequency and DC measurement accuracy.
Operation at DC (0 Hz)
Under DC conditions, the capacitors behave as open circuits with theoretically infinite impedance. Therefore, the capacitive branch no longer conducts current, and the entire voltage distribution is achieved solely by the resistor divider.
